Asian Women’s Shelter (AWS)
Organizational Structure & Culture Alignment
Olive Grove began a multi-pronged project supporting the Asian Women’s Shelter (AWS) through a realignment of organizational structure and culture in 2010. The goal of the work with AWS was to prepare the organization to successfully hire and integrate new leadership into the organization after the departure of their founder and brief tenure of a new Executive Director. AWS was experiencing significant challenges in navigating this transition, which included disagreement on the desired culture of the organization and lack of clarity on roles within and between the staff and board. Over its more than twenty years AWS has functioned with a non-hierarchical consensus-based leadership model and was struggling to effectively work through its organizational challenges within this model. Olive Grove was able to objectively assess where their organizational structure and culture was an asset to them and where it was creating barriers to change. Olive Grove then worked within their unique staff and board structure over the course of one year to develop common goals for organizational sustainability that served as the foundation for moving the organization onto a pathway towards long-term sustainability.
